We’ve partnered with Antonio Munoz, Product Manager at SINTEMAR in creating informative content and solutions on wear and protecting from wear. Read the original article in Spanish: “HABLANDO DE… LA ELECCIÓN DE UN BUEN RECUBRIMIENTO DE PROTECCIÓN ES UN FACTOR CLAVE FRENTE AL DESGASTE INDUSTRIAL Y LAS PARADAS DE PLANTA.”
The current pandemic situation is having repercussions on the programming of company activities. Mobility restrictions, raw material crises and uncertainty are some of the current situations with which we are forced to live. Trying to plan our lives, both personally and professionally, is a complicated task to manage due to the unforeseen events that occur in our day to day life.
The industrial sector, meanwhile, cannot slow down its production process. Industrial plants have to be prepared to get the most out of their facilities, always complying with prevention, safety and sustainability protocols.
Avoiding costly unplanned production stops is a permanent challenge in the area of maintenance to achieve the objectives.
One of the usual activities within the maintenance program consists of minimizing the wear and tear of the equipment and industrial installations involved in the production processes. This factor is decisive to avoid unnecessary setbacks that may interfere with the normal development of the plant.
Wear is a global problem that affects all sectors of the industry in one way or another. Choosing the appropriate protective coating is a key factor in achieving success.
The causes of wear can be mechanical or chemical and are classified into 4 main groups: corrosion, erosion, abrasion and impact. Each situation requires a different response or approach when selecting the most appropriate protection or sacrificial material.
The actual operating conditions, such as acid concentrations, temperatures, the size of the abrasive particles, will determine the suitability of the most appropriate product in each wear situation.
At SINTEMAR, we have been offering solutions with epoxy, urethane and polyurethane products for more than 50 years through our represented ITW Performance Polymers, which includes the Devcon®, Irathane®, Korrobond® and Chockfast® brands.
Within our protection coatings and cold welding division, we have proven experience in primary tanks and containment basins, loading and unloading floors exposed to degradation due to chemical and mechanical attack; flotation cells, endless screws, conveyor belts, centrifugal pumps and valves subjected to wear due to corrosion and abrasion.
The know-how acquired and the contrasting experiences during all these years encourage us to continue working on tailor-made solutions that generate value for our clients.
We usually resort to epoxy resins with metallic fillers when it is necessary to seal or rebuild equipment; flexible coatings are a good solution when it comes to reducing impacts; ceramic-filled epoxy resins act as sacrificial material against erosion and abrasion; Novolac epoxy polymers are continuous coatings that act as a protection barrier against acids.
Over time, we have become more convinced about the benefits of the products developed by ITW Performance Polymers, not only for their wear resistance properties, but also for the advantages they bring to industrial plants compared to other technologies on the market. Our solutions:
- Avoid electric welding in atex atmospheres
- They consist of continuous coatings, without joints
- Allow local repairs, without disassembly
- They facilitate the immediate return to service of the equipment.
- They favor the energy saving of the plants
The return on investment, therefore, is guaranteed in the short or medium term. At SINTEMAR, we continue with the commitment to continue providing solutions that allow us to improve the control of the planning of industrial plants.
